Luciola

Luciola is a calm, small-scale social network that you join through a node: a server run by people you know or trust.

Luciola is a calm, small-scale social network that you join through a node: a server run by people you know or trust. There are no ads, no algorithm deciding what you see, and no search engine sorting people into trends. Your timeline is simply the sparks of the people you follow, newest first.

YOUR IDENTITY IS YOURS

When you sign up, Luciola gives you a 24-word recovery phrase. It is your identity. It never leaves your device, and there is no password to leak or reset. Your phone keeps its own signing key in the Keychain, on this device only. If you ever want to live somewhere else, you can move your identity to another node and take your name, bio and photo with you.

FOLLOW PEOPLE, NOT FEEDS

There is no search. To follow someone, you enter the address they gave you, like @[email protected]. People on other nodes are just as easy to follow as your neighbours on your own.

YOU DECIDE WHO REPLIES

Replies from people you don’t follow on other nodes wait for your approval. Nobody else sees them until you say yes. You can approve a reply, answer it, or block the person, right from your notifications. Blocks apply on your node, and the other node is told which sparks were involved, never who you are.

SPARK SOMETHING

Write a spark with up to four photos or videos, and check in at a place if you like. If you’re offline, your spark waits on your device and goes out when you’re back. Hashtags and links in sparks just work. Pin a spark to the top of your profile, and keep the ones you like in your bookmarks.

ONLY YOU MODE

Turn on “Only me” and your new sparks stay on your node, visible to you alone, like a private notebook. Your earlier sparks stay public.

MADE FOR IPHONE AND IPAD

On iPhone, Luciola fits in one hand. On iPad, it opens up with a sidebar, like the website.

WORKS WITH ANY LUCIOLA NODE

Luciola works with any node running luciola-spark. Sign up on a suggested node or type the address of another one. Each node has its own people and its own rules; you agree to them when you join.
